Gopal Dayaneni is an organizer with the San Francisco-based group
"Direct
Action to Stop the War" (http://www.actagainstwar.org/). He will be
discussing the organizing model used to coordinate non-violent civil
disobedience actions that shut down the financial district of San
Francisco
for a full day, resulting in the arrest of over 1,300 people, when the
attack on Iraq was initiated by the US this last Spring.
The PPRC is organizing this program to provide a setting within which
the
Portland peace and justice community can begin to develop a shared
perspective and understanding of non-violent direction civil
disobedience
within the current context of resistance to US wars.
Mr. Dayaneni will also be conducting at spokescouncil facilitation
workshop

Gopal Dayaneni
Gopal Dayaneni, a leading activist in the struggle for social, economic
and
environmental justice, is an impassioned speaker and organizer. He is
the
former Oil Campaign Coordinator for Project Underground, a human rights
and
environmental rights organizations which support communities resisting
oil
and mining exploitation around the world. Since October, 2002, Gopal
has
been organizing and training in non-violent civil disobedience in
opposition
to the War on Terrorism at home and abroad. Gopal is an outspoken
critic of
U.S. foreign and domestic policies, the 'War on Terrorism", U.S.
government/corporate corruption, war profiteering and the systemic
links
between war and racism. Currently, Gopal provides progressive
organizations
with support in Strategic Communications and Campaign Planning through
the
Design Action Collective. He also sits on the board of Project
Underground.
Since the late 80's, Gopal has been involved in fighting for social,
economic and racial justice through organizing, teaching, writing,
speaking
and non-violent direct action.
